New Boston Baked Beans

Apple butter adds the right thickness and richness to this classic side dish.


Servings: 1/2 cup, makes 24 servings

1 qt. (2 lb.) dry navy or great northern beans
2 cups onion, chopped
1 lb. turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 qt. (about 40 oz.) MUSSELMAN'S Premium Apple Butter
1 Tbsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground black pepper


  1. Rinse and drain beans. In large pot, combine beans and cover with water. Let stand over night. Drain.
  2. Place beans in large pot and cover with 1 gallon water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours or until beans are just tender, stirring occasionally. Drain.
  3. Transfer to 2 gallon (deep half steamtable pan) or casserole or bean pot. Add onion and bacon. Stir in apple butter, mustard, salt and pepper. Bake in 300°F oven, covered, for two hours. Uncover and bake to desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Serve hot.
