Spiced Apple Sauce Cake

Made with apple sauce and walnuts, baked to perfection and completed with a dollop of apple butter frosting, this skillet-made spice cake serves up a decadent combo.

Spiced Apple Sauce Cake


4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp salt
½ tsp ground nutmeg
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
½ cup packed brown sugar
3 eggs
4 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups Musselman's® Premium Blend Apple Sauce
¾ cup toasted chopped walnuts
¾ cup raisins


Apple Butter-Cream Cheese Frosting:
24 oz brick-style plain cream cheese
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ cups icing sugar, sifted
1 cup Musselman's® Premium Apple Butter
1 tbsp vanilla extract
¾ cup toasted walnuts, chopped (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 350˚ Grease four 9-inch cast iron skillets. Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg.
  2. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then add the in vanilla. Decrease speed to low; alternately add flour mixture in 3 parts and Musselman’s® Premium Blend Apple Sauce in 2 parts, starting and ending with flour mixture (scrape down bowl as needed between additions). Fold in walnuts and raisins.
  3. Scrape batter evenly into prepared pans, smoothing top. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until tester comes out clean when inserted into center of cake. Cool completely on wire rack or serve warm.
  4. Apple Butter-Cream Cheese Frosting: Using electric mixer, beat cream cheese until light and fluffy; add in butter until blended. Incorporate icing sugar, Musselman’s® Premium Apple Butter and vanilla and continue beating the mixture just until smooth.
  5. Slice each cake into 6 wedges. Serve with dollop of frosting and sprinkle of walnuts if desired.

Tip: Substitute pecans, almonds or hazelnuts for walnuts.
